Lecture at The Stage by Axel Venn:
Creating Ambience with Art

Rooms large and small are becoming private galleries. Nothing is more flattering than posing for one’s own portrait in front of a 180 x 180 canvas. Politicians prove their awareness of the spirit of the time by having themselves filmed and photographed while conversing in front of works by present-day master artists. Axel Venn will show by means of a variety of visual formats how (the design process) can be original and very personal.

The sense of reserve in the presence of large format paintings has similar roots to those of anxiety about intense colours, a flaring fireplace or apparently oversized rooms. Large surfaces create free space for ideas. They offer contemplative or representative fields of expression for art that ennobles rooms.

Pictures enable stories to be told and their poetic essence shifts with the quality and quantity of the light. Of particular importance for Venn are the titles of the pictures . Their role is to impart linguistic meaning to the visual event to make the image accessible to the viewer on another level. And Venn himself lives in the midst of the “Grünprovinz” (Green province), “Rosas Gemeinheiten” (Rosa’s acts of wickedness) or “Congratulations Barbara”, empathising and sharing thoughts.

imm58_2016_Vortrag-Venn_Kunst_PortAs a colour expert, Axel Venn negotiates a path between the worlds of perception, effect and reality. His research into colour is focused on the decoding of messages. A large part of his work is dedicated to research-orientated, strategic trend scouting and the effects on society, economy and design. For decades, he has been guest speaker in Germany and all over the world. Axel Venn is the honorary chairperson of the Deutsches Farbenzentrum e.V. (German Centre for Colours). He has published 25 books on the topic of colour which have so far been translated into 12 languages.
