New furniture and materials are giving rise to some unusual outdoor dining concepts that are as stylish as they are comfortable. The spectrum ranges from tasteful retro-look restaurants all the way to hip and snazzy beach clubs.

As summer sets in and the temperature starts to rise, life is gradually moving outdoors again. Cafés and restaurants tempt sun-seeking guests to linger with patios and outdoor areas; beer gardens and urban beach bars offer after-work parties under the night sky and beach clubs compete for guests’ favour with upmarket design, wellness treatments and cocktails. The more the outdoors evolves into al fresco living space, the greater people’s expectations of the corresponding furnishings and design. Whilst the setting should be as comfortable and relaxed as possible, it should nevertheless be attractive and ambitious as well. That’s particularly obvious from the latest outdoor dining concepts: premium materials that meet indoor standards, inviting easy chairs and loungers and dynamic sectional sofas transform eateries into stylish outdoor lounges with a high feel-good factor.

The outdoor spaces created as backdrops for relaxed eating and drinking in the fresh air are just as diverse as the menus. The latest projects provide a broad spectrum of design styles – from tasteful retro-look restaurants all the way to futuristic outdoor nightclubs or hip and snazzy beach clubs with glowing plastic sculptures. This wide variety of open-air solutions owes its diversity to an increasingly wide range of well-designed outdoor furniture for the contract sector. Besides the design, practical aspects such as easy storage and convenient transport also play a particularly important role.

New materials are also contributing to the current outdoor trend. Innovations such as non-fading and weatherproof cushion covers, antibacterial finishes or fibre-reinforced materials make it possible to design extremely hardwearing furniture that can withstand the weather and is meanwhile every bit the equal of its indoor equivalent when it comes to design and comfort. Even upholstered furniture is suitable for outdoor use when equipped with waterproof cushions and UV-resistant textiles, which explains why it has joined the traditional repertoire of patio furniture made of wood, metal or plastic. Nowadays even weatherproof carpets are being used for outdoor eateries – making them look all the more cosy and attractive.
