The Stage on Wednesday:
The day of colours and materials

Photo: Lutz Sternstein, Koelnmesse

The colour trends for the new interiors season are of particular interest, and will again be presented by Karl Johann Bertilsson (NCS Colour Academy) in 2018. As the flipside to trends in interior colour design, Dr. Hildegard Kalthegener will also have the appropriate anti-trends to hand. But materials will also get their fair share of attention in the lecture forum of The Stage. Hannes Bäuerle (raumPROBE) will highlight the importance of the combination of materials and sound; Dr. Sascha Peters (Haute Innovation) will be giving a presentation about materials for a decarbonised society. Of course, there is more to come on Wednesday:

Dr. Hildegard Kalthegener about Millennial Pink, combination options and alternatives

From its original status of a naive Girlie Colour, Pink has grown up during the last two years and is emancipated now. It has even become one of the dominant colour trends worldwide. As Millennial or Tumblr Pink the powdery nuance seems to be describing not only the feel of Generation Z, but also the preferences of many other customer groups. It can be applied in many different contexts, for fashion and life style products, in interior design and architecture.

The lecture will reflect how the trend emerged and how different shades between Pink and nude can be combined with other colours so that they are suitable not only for the female part of society. Examples for very creative interiors within this topic can be seen from the life style brand Pode, subsidiary of Leolux from the Netherlands. But as with every trend, at the same time a countertrend can be observed, offering alternatives. And maybe the most interesting question: How long will Millennial Pink stay around and what will follow?

Dr. Hildegard Kalthegener is known as color expert and designer for a wide range of industries. She also works as lecturer in design, marketing and architecture for many years. The customers of Dr. Kalthegener come from trade and manufacturing in various sectors of the furniture, paint, kitchen and flooring industry; further customers are universities, architecture offices, and also NCS. In addition to her design and teaching assignments in Europe, the designer has been booked for extensive projects and workshops in the Far East since 2014.

Michael Schlenke presents innovative Ideas for living in old age

In the 1970s, Michael Schlenke, owner of the consultation firm The Caretakers and member of the baby boomer generation, dreamt of a wheelie bike. It represented freedom, mobility and a very special attitude towards life. Today he develops innovative ideas for living in old age and dreams that even stair lifts will have just as cool a design in future. This is because the demographic change can no longer be stopped. In Germany, 17 million people already belong to the generation aged 65 and older. In his lecture, the universal design expert will speak about future trends for companies of the furniture industry, interior designers and architects. Attractively, and on the basis of many practical examples, he provides concrete insights into the principles of universal design, as well as an overview of the potential for growth and designing developments. From his consultation clients, the speaker is aware of the difficulties found at the interfaces between so-called age-suitable products without any sex appeal whatsoever and the design ambitions of the creative economy.

Diplom Betriebswirt (business management graduate) Michael Schlenke is the owner of the consultation firm The Caretakers and a universal design expert. Schlenke has worked throughout Europe as a business manager and business developer in the interior design and furniture industry. Today he advises well-known industrial companies, project developers and real estate operators on entering the growth market of health care. As a freelance journalist, he regularly writes trade articles and is active throughout Europe as a lecturer and keynote speaker.

Book Lounge: Ornament and Colour – Cement Mosaic and Terrazzo Tiles Revisited

Nothing transforms and refines interiors as reliably as an exceptionally beautiful floor. Mosaic floors, terrazzo and ornamental slabs, as they established themselves throughout Europe in villas and townhouses in the second half of the 19th century, were always something special. With the rediscovery of the old patterns and production methods, the VIA company from Bacharach is not only initiating a Renaissance of this flooring classic, but is also paving the way for one of the big trends in current interior design. In her book presentation, Almut Lager reveals the fascination of historical patterns and offers surprising design impulses for one’s own four walls.

Dr. Sasscha Peters explains what green lacewing silk oder chicory mean for the future of design

Photo: Organic fibres from the egg stem of the green lacewing (Source: Fraunhofer IAP)

Green lacewing silk, in vitro leather, chicory plastics, 4D textiles: the material developments of recent months are really something. This is because they point with unprecedented clarity to a transformation of our materials and product culture. With the signing of the Paris Climate Agreement, the community of nations has agreed to the decarbonisation of our industrial system. What this might mean can be seen in the outstanding developments of several scientists and designers. New mechanisms of organic fabrication point out a path in the direction of closed material cycles. Through the use of natural waste materials, a new category of organically-based plastics is being prepared. The usage of biogenic material solutions allows us to direct our attention to the copying of functions from nature.

Dr Sascha Peters is the founder and managing director of the future agency Haute Innovation in Berlin. With his expertise, he is one of the most renowned materials and technologies experts in Europe. In the past 20 years, Peters has been able to acquire extensive experience, which he deploys on behalf of his customers from the automotive and construction industries, as well as for the materials industry. He is the author of numerous trade publications. Since 2014, Peters has been a member of the advisory board of the sponsorship initiative “Twenty20 – Partnership for Innovation”, on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
