An interview with the French design stars Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec about the fair as a meeting place, right answers and the challenges of the contract sector
Stylish, modern and inspiring: in January 2015, imm Cologne will once again be the trendsetter for the interior design industry and the place to be for visitors from around the world. As the yearâ€™s first trade show for interior design, imm cologne showcases contemporary and future trends for the next season and inspires with high-class exhibitors and events.

With Christmas only just over, itâ€™s time to start opening little doors again in Cologne. For several weeks now, 11 selected new products for the imm cologne have been awaiting the pubic spotlight in this warehouse. Weâ€™ll be presenting one of them every day starting today. Watch this space!
What is the beautiful new Gandia Blasco sofa by Stefan Diez doing on the street outside Cologneâ€™s Kolumba Museum? Are the people walking along the promenade of the Rheinau Harbour really allowed to settle down and make themselves comfortable on the latest upholstered furniture from BrÃ¼hl? Have the little leaf-shaped tables on the riverbank always been there? And when did designer furniture like the FreiFrau barstools start hanging out in a KÃ¶lsch pub?
A recently opened solo exhibition at the new branch of Parisâ€™s Centre Pompidou shows a selection of the French brothersâ€™ works from the last fifteen years. The more than 1,000 mÂ² of space in Gallery 3 of the Centre Pompidou Metz, which was designed by architects Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastine, serves the brothers an enormous playground. The two designers have juxtaposed products from Vitra, Magis, Alessi, Established & Sons, Axor Hansgrohe, Kartell, Kvadrat, Cappellini and Ligne Roset without establishing any immediately obvious scenographic link between them. The only thing that seems to connect the works, installations and experiments is an element of playfulness. Perhaps it takes a hall of this size to reveal the extent to which the designers play not just with the scale of the objects and the viewersâ€™ expectations, but with the space itself as well.
[DÂ³] Professionals offers the opportunity for young and independent designers and design studios to present theirÂ ideas to a wide audience and to achieve herewith contacts to the industry and the retail business. In 2011 28 young professionals from 9 different countries have presented their ideas in product design and interior design.

Following the end of the early booking period, Koelnmesse is looking ahead to imm cologne 2012 with optimism. Already, more than 200 days before the event, the rental situation is 18 percent above the figures for the same period for the last imm cologne. Overall, over 70 percent of the hall space has been hired out.
“This result marks a seamless transition from the outstanding imm cologne 2011”, remarks Gerald BÃ¶se, CEO of Koelnmesse, with regard to the registration figures. “Developments in relation to international participation are particularly pleasing. As well as huge demand from Germany, we have seen increased desire for space from Italy, France and Spain”, continues the CEO.
Frank Haubold, director of imm cologne, had the following to say: “The current developments confirm imm cologne as an important international business event. Anyone wanting to earn money through furniture turns to Germany and thus to imm cologne as the biggest event in this market.” LivingInteriors, the new trade fair format for halls 4 and 5, is also awaited with great excitement. Here, everything will revolve around the topics of bathrooms, floors, walls and light.
“Sensational. It was our best interzum ever,” was the general consensus amongst exhibitors at the end of this year’s interzum. With 52,400 trade visitors from 147 countries, the leading international trade fair for the furniture supplier industry was able to announce growth of 13 percent as compared to the previous event in 2009. The internationality of the visitor structure, traditionally always high anyway, increased significantly this year with a plus of 24 percent.
“I’m absolutely thrilled. What’s been happening here over the last few days is incredible. For four days, the exhibitors have been showing what I can only describe as a firework display. The industry has been celebrating itself – with good reason,” concludes Frank Haubold, product manager of interzum and director of the imm cologne. “With this interzum, Koelnmesse has definitely underlined its position as a beacon for the furniture industry. I don’t believe there is any other trade fair venue in the world where three absolute leading events for the respective sectors take place so successfully, in such concentrated form and in such a brief space of time. We are creating precedents for an extremely promising future,” says a visibly satisfied Gerald BÃ¶se, CEO of Koelnmesse.
This year’s interzum was the international meeting point for the supplier industry. The mood was extremely good, exhibitors were able to make new contacts and boost business. And visitors had the opportunity to get a comprehensive overview of what the sector has to offer. There were sophisticated newly developed products on show in all segments.
Just a few weeks to go now until interzum 2011 opens its doors at Cologne Exhibition Centre from 25th to 28th May. Around 1,400 exhibitors will be presenting their latest innovations to visitors from all over the world. But interzum has far more to offer than the pure product exhibitions – a whole series of special presentations, piazzas and thematic focal points spread throughout the fair are guaranteed to make the trade show even more attractive and encourage a lively exchange of ideas.
Light and materials at the innovation of interior forum
For the second time, Hall 4.2 will be hosting the innovation of interior forum, the new attraction for architects, designers and product developers with a special focus on light and materials. In addition there is an information area, a lounge, speech and meeting zone and compact, pre-specified presentation spaces for prestigious companies that form a perfect unit both visually and thematically. The declared aim of innovation of interior is to encourage eye-level communication at state-of-the-art level with partners who share the same aims and values.
As part of the opening ceremony for imm cologne, the Best of Best in this year’s Interior Innovation Award were announced on 17 January 2011. In addition, the three best international up-and-coming designers were presented with the Interior Innovation Award. All award-winning products are being exhibited in special shows at imm cologne.
The large Boulevard of Innovations award exhibition along the northern boulevard presents the products that the jury awarded the “Winner 2011” label as well as those from this preliminary selection proclaimed the 15 Best of Best 2011. The award-winning work of the three best newcomers together with around 30 prototypes from international up-and-coming designers can be seen in the [D3] Contest exhibition in Hall 3.2.
